When I first began hosting websites, I was paying about $10/month plus the cost of my domain name. That sounds pretty cheap, but it’s not so cheap when you’re trying to turn a profit. It all adds up with all the little fees here and there.

Then I checked out 1&1 hosting. Even though you pay a $10 fee to set up your site, they have packages starting as low as $1.99/mo. including one or more domain names. This is a really decent savings. What would cost $70 for six months of service with another provider, would cost you $22 with 1&1. You can even cancel at any time and get a refund for the unused months you have paid in advance (you must pay 6 months ahead of time).

1&1′s customer service is in the Philippines and for the most part they are pretty good — certainly no worse than other hosting companies with customer service in the US! Just be aware that while they answer their phones promptly, you may have to have a little patience while a tech investigates your issue. But at least they investigate. The US techs at one company I have used completely screwed up one of my sites because they refused to listen to the details of what I was trying to achieve. It took me a week and several more screwed up techs to get the problem resolved.

Bottom line — give 1&1 a try.
